Primer ministro inglés (1770–82). Elegido al parlamento a la edad de 22 años, fue lord tesorero (1759–65) y canciller del Exchequer (ministro de hacienda) (1767–70). Como primer ministro, apoyó en forma vacilante tanto medidas severas como conciliadoras hacia las colonias americanas antes de la guerra de independencia de los
Estados Unidos de América. Aunque un partidario no entusiasta de la guerra, fue un dócil instrumento de
Jorge III. Renunció al conocer la noticia de la derrota de Charles Cornwallis en el sitio de
Yorktown. En 1783 formó una breve coalición con su antiguo adversario whig Charles James Fox.
